Churchill is talking about his own portrait, commissioned to celebrate his 80th birthday, as it is unveiled in London’s Westminster Hall in November 1954. This painted study of Churchill by Sutherland, made in preparation of the portrait, is up for auction for the first time. Tristan Fewings/Getty Images for Sotheby'sWhile “The Crown” is not a documentary, it is true that the 80th birthday portrait —described by Churchill as “filthy and malignant” in a letter to his personal doctor — was burned. “(Sutherland) caught him in a much more relaxed, intimate way,” Zlattinger said of the study, a small canvas painted in oils. Sandringham, the private home of the last six British monarchs, sits amid parkland, gardens and working farms about 110 miles (180 kilometers) north of London. This history has made Sandringham a special place for Charles and his entire family. One of the most famous stately homes in Britain, Sandringham sits on an 8,000-hectare (20,000-acre) estate in Norfolk on the eastern coast of England. On the day he died, George reportedly spent the afternoon on the estate with his dogs and a gun. When he was at Cambridge, Charles would often invite friends to spend weekends with him enjoying the shooting at Sandringham.

SYDNEY (AP) — Thousands of Australians protested the anniversary of British colonization of their country with large crowds Friday urging for Australia Day to be moved and for a day of mourning on the holiday some call "Invasion Day." The holiday marks the arrival of 11 British ships carrying convicts at Port Jackson in present-day Sydney on Jan. 26, 1788. For many activists, the day marked the beginning of a sustained period of discrimination and expulsion of Indigenous people from their land without a treaty. Large crowds in Sydney chanted for the Australia Day date to be moved. The government had proposed the first constitutional change since 1977 as a step forward in Indigenous rights.

This approach to grief and mourning might seem to be a good thing, like picking yourself up after a fall. The idea that recovering one’s happiness should be the end goal of mourning dates back to Sigmund Freud. Over the following century, Freud’s ideas about mourning helped to foster an increasingly clinical understanding of grief. The 2022 update to the manual includes “prolonged grief disorder” and adopts the World Health Organization’s 2019 classification of prolonged grief as akin to post-traumatic stress disorder. Traditional mourning practices, with their permanent “burdens,” offer a way for those commitments to continue.

In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world, trying to make it under 80 days. "You see a huge emphasis being placed on building ships that were ever faster than the previous generation of ships," Goodman said. Once aboard the train, Bly began to receive telegrams from her editors and well-wishers. "Sometimes it literally literally just says, 'Nelly Bly's train,'" Behn said. For Behn, what Bly and Bisland did remains incredible and deserve to be remembered as much as Verne's story.

The couple, who toured the country in 2019 as “The Princess and The Shaman,” have created waves in Norway with their alternative beliefs. The wedding will take place on Aug. 24 in Geiranger, prized for its typical Norwegian scenery among mountains and fjords. Yet even though economics lends itself to number-crunching, getting or even defining the numbers we crunch can be problematic. In particular, the Fed would very much like to know how high it needs to keep the interest rate — or more precisely, the interest rate minus expected inflation — to avoid overheating the economy and reigniting inflation. This “natural rate of interest,” a term invented in 1898 by the Swedish economist Knut Wicksell, is often referred to as r* or r-star. Back in 1968, Milton Friedman, in a deliberate echo of Wicksell, argued that there is also a “natural” rate of unemployment consistent with stable inflation. Since referring to any level of unemployment as natural raises some people’s hackles, this is often referred to as the NAIRU, for non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment — and often denoted as, you guessed it, u*.

Still near enough to peek through, though, was the Welsh coast, a handful of long tee shots across the estuary. The British Open, scheduled to conclude on Sunday, may never come closer to Wales. First played when Queen Victoria was on the throne, the Open is a national rite that has encompassed only so much of the nation: Unlike England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Wales has not hosted it. With sites through 2026 already selected and Wales still left out, the drought will last at least as long as the first 154 Opens. By then, Northern Ireland, which did not welcome a modern Open until 2019, will have had another.

This month’s Title Search highlights 19th-century fiction with a puzzle that challenges you to find the main titles of a dozen novels hidden in a block of text. As you uncover the titles, the answer section at the bottom of the screen grows to create a reading list with more information and links to the books. Many of the titles were serialized in periodicals before being released as complete novels, so the publication dates refer to the final books. And because all these 19th-century works have fallen into the public domain, the answer list links to the free e-book versions online. A new literary quiz lands on the Books page each week and you can match wits with previous puzzles in the Book Review Quiz Bowl archive.

A version of this story appeared in the July 7 edition of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists.
